Sun Jan 13 (11am) - Panel Discussion - WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH?

Description
With more than 35 of the latest independent and documentary films from Germany, Switzerland and Austria, a tribute to Ulrich Mu"he, a special revival screening of the only silent Karl Valentin film, and a panel discussion on What Makes You Laugh? the 13th Annual Berlin & Beyond Film Festival is back in full force.

Germany’s Oscar bid for 2008, THE EDGE OF HEAVEN, moves us back and forth from Turkey to Germany to tell a complex story of intersecting lives, where the hopes and dreams of the characters become intertwined in a search for love, home and family. The key protagonists are two men and two women – father and son, mother and daughter – who separately comprise two incomplete families. Akin details these lives quickly and efficiently, before upping the pace and the ante. Events take the bookish Nejat to Istanbul in search of Yeter’s daughter while Ayten, ironically, finds herself in Germany looking for her mother. As is so often the case, life takes on its own momentum; the attractive Ayten soon falls in love with a young German woman who lives with her judgmental mother (Hanna Schygulla).

The film offers a very subtle and emotionally engaging depiction of intertwining lives. Paternal, maternal, heterosexual and lesbian love are juxtaposed with questions of family and Heimat. Rich, dense, finely sketched relationships between characters are the defining features of this poignant and at times devastating film.

Fatih Akin’s new feature marks a major step in his career. Best known for HEAD-ON, this Turkish-German filmmaker has, in a short period, risen to become one of the most significant voices of contemporary German cinema. Courtesy of Toronto International Film Festival

Wednesday, January 16
7pm Winds down with GRAVE DECISIONS / WER FRU"HER STIRBT IST LA"NGER TOT
Seven days later, Berlin & Beyond closes with Bavarian filmmaker Marcus Rosenmu"ller’s feature length directorial debut GRAVE DECISIONS. This delightful coming-of-age tale anchors a special selection of comedies in this year’s Festival.

Tribute to acclaimed actor Ulrich Mu"he
Berlin & Beyond is proud to offer a posthumous tribute to award-winning actor Ulrich Mu"he. In February 2007, amid the hype surrounding The Lives of Others, the 53 year-old actor was diagnosed with cancer. A few months later, Mu"he was dead.

In addition to screening the Oscar winning THE LIVES OF OTHERS, the Festival will also screen Hermann Zschoche’s HALF OF LIFE, (East Germany 1985) where a young Mu"he portrays German poet Friedrich Ho"lderlin and Michael Haneke’s FUNNY GAMES (Austria 1997), a very disturbing look at violence and how it shapes our culture.

This year’s prestigious MK Award competition
In the competition are four dramas - Ann-Kristin Reyels’ HOUNDS, Elke Hauck’s KARGER, Julia von Heinz’s NOTHING ELSE MATTERS, and Jan-Christoph Glaser and Ingo Haeb’s NEANDERTAL. Also competing are two comedies - Ingo Rasper’s FASHION VICTIMS and Ralf Westhoff’s SHOPPEN.

And a special revival screening of obscure silent THE ODDBALL / DER SONDERLING
Starring acclaimed Munich comedian Karl Valentin in his only feature length silent film is Walter Jerven’s DER SONDERLING, a rarely seen German silent film from 1929. Screened with live musical accompaniment by organist Dennis James.

A trio of veteran filmmakers returns with new works
Returning to the Festival is Robert Thalheim with AND ALONG COME TOURISTS, a sensitive and very different view of Auschwitz; and Volker Einrauch with THE OTHER BOY. From Switzerland, again, come Bettina Oberli with a warm-hearted comedy LATE BLOOMERS; and Stefan Hildebrand and Oliver Paulus with the touching story of SO LONG MY HEART.
On the docket, a strong selection of documentaries
In THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, director Michael Verhoeven looks at the controversial Wehrmacht-Exhibition and interviews historians and experts, including those who allege or deny the crimes. Bettina Blumner’s PRINZESSINNENBAD is a frank portrait of three 15-year-old girls, all products of broken homes, living in Berlin's multicultural Kreuzberg district. On a musical note is Leopold Gru"n’s THE RED ELVIS, a look at the late American entertainer Dean Reed, who became a huge star in East Germany after settling there in 1973. Andreas Geiger’s HEAVY METAL IN THE COUNTRY offers a glimpse at Nuclear Blast Records, the heavy metal label located in the countryside town of Donzdorf.

Always an important part of the Festival, movies for the younger set
Berlin & Beyond will include Audience Award winner (to be announced soon). Also on the bill will be free a screenings for students and children of PAULA’s SECRET and Vivian Naefe’s WILD CHICKS IN LOVE.
