Hanks in Berlin

Berlin is a buzz with talk of Tom Hanks new movie, apparently based on a US pop singer who became a music idol across Europe in the 1970s. For more than 15 years Dean Reed was a hero in the socialist East Bloc until he committed suicide and his body was found in a Berlin Lake in 1986. Spokesmen at the Babelsberg Film Studios said, 'naturally, we'd be delighted if Tom Hanks makes a film here. But until contracts have been signed we can make no comment.' If the film, which has a working title of Comrade Rockstar does go ahead the two-time Academy Award winning actor, writer and movie director would play the part of Reed. Hanks has reportedly been interested in the story of Reed and in 2004 flew to Berlin to meet some of the singer's former showbiz acquaintances, and talk with his widow, Renate. During the visit, Hanks announced that he had secured the film rights to Reed's life from the singer's family, and had been given the go-ahead from the US DreamWorks Studios to produce and star in a movie about
