Favourite film

by vdobromir-1 (Thu May 5 2005 06:11:39)
I know some of his films aren't very good but probably he has lots of nice movie s such as Los Corsarios 1971,Kit&Co 1974, Sing,Cowboy, sing 1981 etc.I have seen only Nipoti di Zorro 1968 and I think it was rather funny but I have heard that Sotto a chi tocca 1972 is horrible. What do you think about his films?

by mcmillinmovies (Sat May 20 2006 22:12:57)
I have not seen any of his films but I would like to. Do you know anyplace that has them available?

by vdobromir-1 (Thu Jun 1 2006 07:04:42)
Some of his films are available on Amazon.Others are sometimes shown on German or Italian TV channels. So,it depends on where you live.On June the German TV channels ARD and MDR show his films "Adios,Sabata" and "Blood Brothers".

Movie about Dean Reed.

by mojo5280 (Sat Jun 17 2006 13:08:47)
Although there was lots of talk a couple of years ago about Tom Hanks making a movie about the life of Dean Reed, don't plan on it anytime in the near future. It appears Hanks has lost interest. Too bad because Dean lived an unbelievable life.

by vdobromir-1 (Mon Jun 19 2006 08:33:53)
Let's hope that Hanks hasn't lost interest and that he is just planning to shot the film after some time.If so,I don't think he is suitable to play Dean Reed - Hanks is already 50 and Dean died when he was 48.They should choose another actor.

by vdobromir-1 (Sun Jul 23 2006 10:12:14)
The German company TOTHO has shot a 90minute documentary about the life of Dean Reed. The title of the documentary is "The Red Elvis".More information on www.theredelvis.com.There is a trailer of the documentary on the site. As for the Tom Hanks's project I haven't heard new information recently.

His death

by vdobromir-1 (Thu May 5 2005 06:16:15)
Dean Reed's death is quite mysterious.I saw a Russian documentary about him where it was said that maybe Shtazi has something to do with his death. Also it was said that at the night he died he had a quarrel with his wife Renate Blume. After that he left his house and his car was found in a lake nearby. However there are lots of strange circumstances surrounding his death.Does anybody know something else about it?

by MisterZZZ (Mon Feb 27 2006 17:15:47)
Read the book Rock and Roll Radical. Reed was depressed after appearing on 60 Minutes. He received a lot of hate mail from the USA. He also told a friend that he wanted to kill himself and his relationship with his wife was not good at the time. I think he killed himself.

by alien777 (Sun Jun 25 2006 00:22:49) UPDATED (Mon Jun 26 2006 02:55:17)
Yeah, you hit it on the head :-) His death DOES appear to be mysterious. 1) The mysteries begin with his death date: Half of the accounts say he left his house on 12 June and his body was found 17 June. But a smaller portion say he left on 8th and was found on 13th. That beats me. Towards the end of the 20th c., when the timing of all major world events is usually known to the second, they can't agree on such a crucial aspect leaving a margin the size of one whole week, or even 10 days. I mean he wasn't some heathen peasant in the Indonesian jungle after all - the man was rather famous, or notorious, if you choose. And I haven't mentioned the "in-between" versions - why I even saw a Russian newspaper report (on the web) putting the year of his death as 1985! (But then it was most likely a mere typo - the paper was printed in 1991, they had no law and order back then. You should've seen the stories they ran at the time! "Wild" isn't quite the word to describe them - "plain gibberish" would be more to the point. :-/ ). 2) The mysteries continue with his death SITE: Most reports say he was found drowned in the nearby lake, even though some of them say "near" - not "in" - the lake. But I've come across reports saying he "was found in a small river", "died at a film-shooting session" and even "was found with his throat slit"! The wildest stories were in English - so they might just be in the (Mark Twain's) "Journalism in Tennessee" vein. :-) (I didn't know such "reporting" was still practised 100 yrs on.) 3) Nor is the CAUSE of his death luminously clear: Most say he was drowned, but then there're those "died-at-a-film-shooting-session" and "his-throat-was-slit" versions. :-) I also read about alleged poisoning, and the latest version in a Russian (pro-communist) paper, "Sovetskaya Rossiya", claims that he swallowed several tranquilliser/sleeping pills and then went and drowned himself in that lake. :-( Is it common to take tranquillisers before committing suicide at all? I have never heard of such practice - but then I might be ill-informed on the subject. My limited common sense tells me that if you consume a tranquilliser before committing suicide you risk (if "risk" would fit here, of course) to just fall asleep - entirely forgetting to kill yourself as a consequence. But then I'm just a layman - there might be better experts on suicide habits than myself out there. :-) And the main unanswered question remains of course: DID he kill himself at all, or was it murder? Or just a mere swimming accident? ---To be continued ;-)

A CIA Agent?

by vdobromir-1 (Thu May 5 2005 06:19:32)
In the Russian documentary I saw about him it was said that he might have been a CIA agent but I don't think it is true, probably it is just a gossip. But who knows...

by mcmillinmovies (Fri Jun 16 2006 15:44:33)
Was the documentary pre or post soviet? I doubt that he was but one never knows. Almost all Americans behind the iron curtain were considered either direct or indirect agents of the CIA. It was believed that all returning Americans were debriefed about their time there.

by mojo5280 (Sat Jun 17 2006 13:16:13)
Don't be too sure he wasn't a CIA agent. Considering he went to Colorado University in Boulder, Colorado where, at that time in the 1950s the CIA set up recruting booths on campus, and knowing Dean loved a challenge, who would ever suspect a guitar playing kid from Colorado as a CIA agent?

by alien777 (Mon Jun 19 2006 03:33:23) UPDATED (Mon Jun 19 2006 03:55:13)
Dear Dobromir (ti da ne si bylgarin? mozhe da si pogovorim i na bylgarski ako poiskash), The film you're referring to is most likely "Kto vy, mister Rid?" (Who are you, Mr Reed?). A sillier film I don't remember to have ever seen (nor do I wish to ever see again) - I'd thought the time of such things had ended with the fall of the Berlin wall, but... even in the worst days of Communist black propaganda and censorship, film-producers tried to present at least SOME evidence to support their bizarre or sensational claims. This film... words fail me - all their "proof" was utter hearsay; it went something like this: =============== Interviewee #1: "Well, it was from the US that he came to the USSR - he must've been a CIA agent: just think how easy it would have been for him to pass sensitive info while he was signing photos for fans..." (should I cry or laugh at this kind of reasoning?) ------------ Interviewee #2: "Well, he came to the USSR - he was probably recruited by the KGB: don't we all know how powerful and sinister the organisation was back then..." ------------- Interviewee #3: "He finally settled in the GDR (East Germany) - well doesn't it imply that he was recruited by the Stasi police - don't we all remember how all-knowing and omnipresent it was back then..." =============== They effectively made him "an agent of three intelligence services"! - a standard indictment in Stalin's show trials in his 1930s "purges". And yes, correct, all the "evidence" in the film WAS just the interviewees' gossip and innuendo. The only "document" in that "documentary" was a blurry image of an old British newspaper with Reed's highlighted words - allegedly to the effect that he was going to visit the US soon - which the authors cited as a plausible reason for the Stasi to want to murder him (in fact, the man had been visiting his homeland continually). But, again, it was the ONLY document in the entire film. In no other sources apart from this film have I ever come across any solid proof to support the film-makers' claims about Dean Reed's alleged involvement in any spying programmes. I'm not saying that he was NOT a spy - how should I know? But you'd better not rely on that film as a source of any meaningful info on the subject.

Balgarin sam, prav si:).I agree with you that the film was far from good and tried to make a cheap sensation of Dean's life.I have read and watched a lot about him and I don't think he can have spent 25 years of his life deceiving people. He may have been a naive person but I don't think he was a liar or a spy.
